So what is a stye?

A stye is a painful boil or lump on the root of the eyelash. It may be present on the upper or lower eyelid, outside or inside the eye. Normally, a style goes away on its own within a few days and you do not really need to do anything special to get rid of it. However, in many cases, the stye can get enlarged or even start draining pus inside the eyes. This could lead to secondary ocular infections which might need antibiotics for treatment. So, in this guide, we will help you with everything you need to know about eye styes and 11 best natural home remedies to get rid of styes quickly.

What are the symptoms of an eye stye?

Styes , also called Chalazion, are characterized by redness, tenderness of the eyelids, pus, swelling and mild pain or inflammation. In some patients, the stye could cause severe secondary infections which could lead to blurry vision, watery eyes or even a larger painful bump on the inner eyelids that blocks the vision partially.

How to get rid of a stye fast?

1. Leave the stye alone

In most cases, the stye will run its course-it will swell, come to head and discharge the pus leaving behind a normal eyelid. You do not really need to do anything to cure the stye. Just make sure you observe the stye incase it increases in size or the pain worsens. You might need antibiotics or special eye drops to get rid of it.

2. Use a warm compress or used tea bags

There are multiple ways in which you can make a warm compress to drain the stye. Heat up a clean soft cloth using a hot stove and apply the compress to the eye. Alternatively, you can heat up a spoon and use it to drain the stye. You can also apply used tea bags and press down gently on the stye. The heat reduces pain and swelling and helps the stye drain quickly. Use the warm compress at least 3 times a day, keeping it on the stye for 10 minutes each time.

3.  Use salt water to wash the eye

An eye wash made of fresh, warm water and a teaspoon of salt can also help you rid of the stye infection quickly. Use the solution to wash the infected eye at least 3 times a day. This is one of the best home remedies to get rid of painful eye styes.
Another great solution for exposing your eyes to salt water, especially in the summer days is having an above ground pool. If you have an above ground pool just wash yourself for 30 minutes – and it should have an amazing effect on your eyes!

4.  Maintain eye hygiene

One of the most common causes of eye stye is unhygienic conditions like touching the eyes with dirty hands or using infected makeup brushes etc. So, the first thing to do to prevent styes is to avoid touching the eyes. You must also:

  • Remove all makeup before sleeping.
  • Wash or change makeup brushes (for women who suffer from recurrent eye infections)
  • Wash the eyes frequently with warm water and mild soap.
  • Avoid sharing face washes, towels, eye liner brushes and other makeup products with others.
  • Throw away the warm compress used for pressing down on the stye.
  • Avoid squeezing, scratching or rubbing the stye.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the face.

5. Use compress made of milk and turmeric

An eye stye can also be drained overnight by applying a compress of warm milk with turmeric. Turmeric contains antiseptic properties that heal infections quickly. So, heat up some milk, add a teaspoon of turmeric to it, dip a clean sterile cotton ball in it and apply it on the stye. Press down gently and let the compress remain on the eye for 10 minutes. This is a wonderful folk remedy that can quickly drain painful styes.

6. Use baby shampoo to clean the eye

This remedy to cure and heal styes quickly is even recommended by ophthalmologists. Baby shampoo is the best way of cleaning the eyes without causing a burning sensation typical of harsh soaps. To use this remedy- make a solution of baby shampoo with some warm water in equal quantities. Dip a cloth or a clean Q-tip and apply the shampoo to the infected eyelid. This will remove the stye-causing bacteria from the base of the eyelid and help the swelling go down quickly.

7. Drain the stye

Draining an eye stye is best done by a doctor. The stye must come to head fully before you can drain it. This will help remove the pus from the stye and cure it quickly.

8. Take pain killers

In case you are unable to bear the pain of the stye, take some Acetaminophen or Paracetamol pills. Do not take more than 4 tablets per day.

9. Use eye drops

Over-the-counter eye drops or eye ointments containing Chloramphenicol can help give much needed relief from painful styes present on the inner eyelids. Use the medicine at least 3-4 times a day or as recommended by the doctor.

10. Apply gold jewelry on the stye

This might sound unbelievable, but applying some clean gold jewelry (made with 14 K gold preferably) can help drain the stye quickly.  Use rubbing alcohol to clean the jewelry (such as an earring or a wedding band) first, then rub it on the stye a couple of times. (Continue rubbing for at least 5 minutes). The gentle pressure will drain the stye and help you get rid of it completely in a few hours.

11.  Antibiotics

If none of the home remedies to get rid of stye quickly help you, you might need to get a prescription for antibiotics. These could be topical or systemic. In either case, follow the doctor's instructions and take the complete dose. If you skip the dose or take only half of the recommended amount, the infection could return.

In very rare cases, you might need to undergo stye removal surgery where the surgeon will surgically remove the infected eyelash that is causing the stye. You will need to take some antibiotics to heal from such surgery. We hope these stye removal remedies cure you quickly and help you get much needed relief.
